Intercambios: Art, Stories & Communidad
Intercambios: Art, Stories, & Comunidad presented collaborative works from artists in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, and the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. The work on textiles, photography, printmaking, papermaking, music, and video visually explores intersections of cultures and media.
As the eleven artists in the exhibition, we come from diverse backgrounds. We are from both sides of the Mexico/US border and speak five languages. Our group is a blend of cultures and approaches. These differences have allowed us to examine what we share and honor, what makes us unique.
The intersection of our techniques, artistic styles, visions, and stories produced three key themes. Our work honors and remembers loved ones who have passed and the fleeting nature of life. We understand the potential of migration to both destroy and cultivate traditions. And finally, we recognize the importance of our shared histories.
Our collective work asks questions about what it means to cross and connect worlds: life and death, art and craft, and the borders between countries, languages, cultures, and classes.
